About the client

The client - Clooney Foundation for Justice (CFJ) - is an international nongovernmental organisation founded by Amal and George Clooney. CFJ aims to gather evidence of mass human rights abuses, provide free legal support to victims and work to ensure that perpetrators are held to account. Since it was founded in 2016, CFJ has grown every year, and now the organisation operates in more than 40 countries. CFJ actively investigates war crimes in Ukraine, monitors sham trials targeting women and journalists, and fights against a global trend of authoritarianism that seeks to punish those who speak truth to power.

Challenges

CFJ needed a tool to show how existing laws around the world can be used to obtain justice for the most serious international crimes. The main goal was to increase access to justice for all survivors and ensure that perpetrators are held to account. The tool needed to be simple and easily understandable for users, but also connected to a live database and capable of complex data analytics The challenge was to create a product that could meet these requirements while maintaining the uniqueness of the Clooney Foundation for Justice mission.

Our solutions

DeepInspire provided comprehensive technology consulting and discovery services to transform the initial idea into an action plan. We conducted extensive research and analysis, defined a data visualization strategy, developed UI/UX Design concept and prepared a product development plan.

Platform main structure:

Based on the discovery workshop results, we have developed a solution to create a mapping tool in the form of a 3D globe that should be used as both a navigation tool between regions/countries and a comparison visualization of legalisation of crimes.

To overcome some specific data visualization challenges, we transformed part of the qualitative indicators into quantitative ones for their group visualization and analysis. Also, we suggested the aggregation concept for data and provided the concept of delivering click-through data in two directions.

Process

Solution Discovery

Conducted deep research and analysis of the existing documentation;
Defined key requirements;
Interviews with stakeholders, brainstorming and ideating;
Defined data visualisation strategy;
Defined possible ways of implementation and their scope.

UI/UX Design

As a result of the discovery phase, we prepared the graphic design with 3D elements and styled charts for quick navigation and analysis that allows to effectively cover all use cases defined.

Prepared UX Concept

The UX Concept includes use cases, target audience groups, main functionality, informational structure, pages structure, navigation elements, filters etc. Our team designed the UX Concept considering the needs of the major user groups we defined: NGOs, prosecutors, legislators, donors, journalists, general public.

Prepared UI Design

Based on the UX Concept our designer visualised the product's interface that is clear, intuitive, consistent and easy to navigate.

Development Plan

Defined technical vision of implementation;
Described summary result of the technical review of the project and prepared vision for the development phase;
Prepared UML Diagram of implementation for development;
Prepared Product backlog with a defined and prioritised list of tasks to be done during the Development Phase.

Outcomes

Altogether, our technology consulting helped the customer create a unique and highly functional product and enabled the company to move forward with confidence. The Clooney Foundation for Justice now has a tool that can provide valuable data to support investigations of war crimes, monitor trials, and promote justice and human rights around the world.

The data visualisation tool built according to our solutions is:

Digestible with key metrics and trends highlighted;
Easy to understand;
Visually appealing and user engaging;
Aligned with the main website and can be easily supported by the CFJ team.

Our solution and UI/UX concept we have handed over to the Redback Solutions team, who were assigned to implement it.

The Justice Beyond Borders project holds special significance for our team because our company is located in Ukraine. Currently, there is a full-scale war taking place in our country, and russian forces are committing tens of thousands of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. The time will come when war criminals will be held accountable for their actions, so now it is crucial to properly document all the crimes. Justice Beyond Borders is now considered a unique product with no analogues, and the DeepInspire team takes great pride in our contribution to this significant cause.

Our solution helped CFJ transform tons of data into an easily understandable, visually appealing and user-engaging tool.
